Meta’s Reality Labs Explores Wearable AI Tech with Camera Earbuds and Mixed-Reality Goggles
Meta’s Reality Labs, the division of Meta known for its virtual reality and augmented reality technology, is pushing the boundaries of wearable AI tech, according to CTO Andrew Bosworth. In a recent interview with Command Line, Bosworth revealed that the company is exploring a wide range of wearable AI devices, including camera earbuds and mixed-reality goggles.
Despite facing budget cuts and layoffs, Reality Labs is forging ahead with its innovative projects. Bosworth emphasized that the rapid advancement of wearable technology is opening up new possibilities for incorporating AI into everyday accessories. He stated, “If there’s a part of your body that could potentially host a wearable that could do AI, there’s a good chance we’ve had a team run that down.”
One of Reality Labs’ recent releases is Orion, a pair of augmented reality glasses that Bosworth described as “the most advanced piece of technology on the planet in its domain.” The division has also been working on camera earbuds and “steampunk” mixed reality goggles, with the latter reportedly advancing to the product release process.
While Reality Labs has implemented cost-cutting measures, including layoffs targeting middle and senior managers, Bosworth emphasized that the division remains committed to exploring new ideas. He explained that Reality Labs follows a meticulous process from concept to release, with successful prototypes eventually making their way to the public.
“We definitely don’t want to be outflanked by someone who came up with some clever, integrated wearable that we hadn’t thought about,” Bosworth said.
