Wolvic Chromium 1.1 Adds WebXR AR Support and More
Wolvic Chromium 1.1, the latest update to the open-source standalone XR browser, has added support for WebXR Augmented Reality (AR). This new feature allows web apps to use passthrough or transparency as the background, expanding the possibilities for immersive experiences on headsets like Meta Quest, Pico, Magic Leap 2, and Huawei VR Glasses.
The Wolvic browser, which was originally the successor to Firefox Reality, has been developed by “open source software consultancy” Igalia since Mozilla handed over the project in 2022. The browser still supports Firefox Sync, allowing users to sync their bookmarks, tabs, and passwords across devices.
In addition to the new WebXR AR support, Wolvic Chromium 1.1 also introduces downloadable VR environments in flatscreen browsing mode. This update comes shortly after the release of version 1.0, which brought eye tracked navigation to the browser. This feature allows users on headsets with eye tracking, such as the Meta Quest Pro, to select and interact with content using their eyes and fingers.
Other improvements in the 1.1 update include password autofill in private browsing mode and numerous bug and stability fixes. While the Wolvic builds on app stores are still Gecko-based, users can download the Chromium version as an APK and sideload it onto their devices.
With these new features and improvements, Wolvic is positioning itself as a top choice for users looking for a versatile and cutting-edge XR browsing experience.
