Introduction to the Piffetti Library

The Piffetti Library, an 18th-century masterpiece of Baroque cabinetmaking, has been restored to its original context at Villa della Regina in Turin, because of a digital project by the Politecnico di Torino and Shazarch. This project utilizes augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies to permit visitors to experience the library in its original setting.

History of the Piffetti Library

The library was originally built for the Library Cabinet of Villa della Regina, some of the elegant Savoy residences within the Piedmont region. However, in 1879, it was transferred to the Quirinal Palace, where it stays today. This transfer resulted within the lack of its original context, making it difficult for visitors to understand its intended setting.

The Digital Project

The collaboration between the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) of the Polytechnic University of Turin and the corporate Shazarch s.r.l. aimed to recreate the library in its original location using AR and VR technologies. This project, entitled "Restoring Memory. Virtual Reconstruction of the Piffetti Library for Cultural Heritage Accessibility," shall be officially presented on June 13.

Presentation and Technical Solutions

The presentation will happen on the Hall of Honor of Villa della Regina in Turin and can include institutional greetings from key figures resembling Filippo Masino, Director of the Savoy Royal Residences, and Sara Lyla Mantica, Director of Villa della Regina. The technical solutions adopted for the project’s implementation may also be discussed, including using AR and VR technologies to recreate the library.

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Modes

The project was developed in two principal modes: augmented reality and virtual reality. The AR mode allows visitors to see the library directly within the Library Cabinet, its original space, using a smartphone and a dedicated app. The VR mode, available within the Audiovisual Room of Villa della Regina, provides a more immersive experience.

Accessibility and Enjoyment

The technology utilized in the project makes it possible to supply a dynamic and participatory type of enjoyment, adaptable to different audiences. Visitors can download the free app and frame the environment with their camera to view the digitally reconstructed library in real time, with a high level of detail that restores the accuracy and refinement of the unique materials.

Conclusion

The digital project to revive the Piffetti Library to its original context at Villa della Regina is a major achievement in the sphere of cultural heritage accessibility. Through using AR and VR technologies, visitors can now experience the library in its intended setting, appreciating its beauty and historical significance. This project sets a precedent for using digital technologies in preserving and showcasing cultural heritage, making it more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience.
