Apple Vision Pro Boosts Growth in Headset Market: New Research

New research from IDC suggests that the introduction of the Apple Vision Pro headset is not only changing the game for Apple, but also for the entire headset market. While competitors like Meta may argue that their products are superior, it is undeniable that Apple’s foray into Mixed Reality (MR) with the Vision Pro has brought much-needed attention to the industry.

According to IDC research director Ramon T. Llamas, MR has traditionally been the exception rather than the norm in the headset market. However, Apple’s success with the Vision Pro has highlighted the potential of MR technology, prompting other companies to follow suit. Research manager Jitesh Ubrani notes that this shift towards MR is laying the groundwork for more immersive Augmented Reality (AR) experiences in the future.

Despite a recent decline in global shipments of AR and VR headsets, IDC predicts a significant rebound with a 44.2% growth expected by the end of 2024. This growth is anticipated to be driven by the introduction of new headsets and a shift towards using headsets for content creation rather than just consumption. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in content creation for headsets is expected to play a key role in driving market growth.

Looking ahead, Bloomberg predicts that the Apple Vision Pro could become a significant market for Apple, comparable in size to the iPad market. While a more affordable version of the Vision Pro is not expected until at least mid-2025, the impact of Apple’s entry into the headset market is already being felt across the industry. As the market continues to evolve and innovate, it is clear that the Apple Vision Pro is just the beginning of a new era for headsets.
