Present Futures: Virtual and Augmented Reality in Art offers an introduction to the fascinating world of latest technologies and the way they’re changing contemporary art and its institutions.

Led by John Slyce (RCA) and Daniel Birnbaum (Acute Art), this course offers multiple perspectives on how today’s virtual media will expand the ways we make, present and experience art.

With gallery and studio visits, in addition to guest talks from globally recognised artists, industry figures and academics, it is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for anyone fascinated by the intersection of virtual and augmented realities (VR/AR) and contemporary art.

Guest contributors you’ll interact with in-person or online on the 2024 programme include: Es Devlin (Artist and Stage Designer), Marco Brambilla (Artist and Film Director), Hans Ulrich Obrist (Curator and Director of the Serpentine Gallery), Simon Fox (CEO, Frieze Art Fairs) and more to be announced!

They will share how they’re engaging with, exhibiting, collecting, negotiating and understanding the impact of those latest technologies on the art world ecosystem.

“A very interdisciplinary experience. I used to be so impressed by the range of fields the course was in a position to draw upon each when it comes to speakers and students.” —Thomas McLucas, 2023 participant

“Present futures has been a revelatory experience that has profoundly touched the soul of my practice, re-imagining possibilities of creation, sense of place and intentionality.” —Julia Mahrer, 2023 participant
