University at Albany Introduces Virtual Reality Class in Groundbreaking Move
Exciting news is coming out of the University at Albany as they launch the first-ever class utilizing virtual reality headsets. The cutting-edge technology is revolutionizing the classroom experience for students in the Department of Information Sciences and Technology.
Instructor Claire Thomas is leading the charge, bringing 30 Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets into the computer lab at UAlbany’s Science Library. Thanks to a grant program in partnership with Meta, students now have the opportunity to dive into the world of virtual and augmented reality game development.
For many students, this is their first time experiencing VR technology due to its high cost. The excitement is palpable as they immerse themselves in creating their own virtual worlds and games. Gabriel Ross, a student in the class, emphasizes the importance of this equipment, stating, “It’s not even help; it’s necessary. If we didn’t have this equipment, we couldn’t do it.”
The potential for students to enter the booming games industry is significant, with the VR class paving the way for future opportunities. With plans to expand the program and potentially introduce a game development design major, the University at Albany is at the forefront of integrating emerging tech into education.
As Ross aptly puts it, “When you are playing a game, you’re not witnessing, you are a part of it.” The future looks bright for students at UAlbany as they harness the power of virtual reality to shape their educational and professional journeys.
