Introduction to Desktop Augmented Reality

The UK-based deep tech company, Perception, focuses on Desktop Augmented Reality (Desktop AR), which is a technology that turns 2D computers into immersive and interactive 3D content displays. The company develops a Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers to make computer applications using this technology.

The Founder and the Company

Perception was founded in 2019 by Dr. Sirisilp Kongsilp, also often called "Rabbit", a pioneer in Desktop AR. With support from the UK’s Department for International Trade (DIT) in Thailand, the corporate qualified for the UK’s Global Entrepreneur Programme (GEP), which supports overseas deep tech entrepreneurs trying to use the UK as a springboard to scale up internationally. Currently, Perception is partnering with museums and schools in each the UK and Thailand to bring 3D digital artifacts and interactive learning to life using its holographic applications.

Workshop on Developing Desktop AR

On Thursday, 11 Feb 2020, Perception hosted a workshop on developing Desktop AR for 26 Bangkok Prep International School students in Key Stage 3. The workshop focused on educating students with basic coding skills and providing a hands-on exercise for them to develop their very own Desktop AR using the corporate’s Holographic Software Development Kit (Holo-SDK). The students learned the fundamental principles of Desktop AR technology and the fundamental tools for making applications through a bit of game that involves an astronaut exploring Mars together with his rovers and satellite.

How Holo-SDK Works

The Holo-SDK utilizes Augmented Reality (AR) technology, enabling users to create their very own version of a volumetric display. The software creates the illusion of 3D objects and scenes on any strange 2D monitor using just a pc, webcam, and 3D glasses (anaglyph glasses). Students with basic coding skills can enhance their programming skillset and expand their portfolio using Holo-SDK.

Building Future Technological Entrepreneurs

The company plans to do more workshops with the college and expand to other schools in Thailand and worldwide, with an aim to construct future technological entrepreneurs and professionals. "We want to teach our young students to be technology entrepreneurs, be creators, not consumers. This is why we organized the workshop to show students at a really young age," said Dr. Krisada Chaiyasarn, Chief Technology Officer of Perception.

Partnership with Schools and Museums

Perception’s recent business decision to expand to the UK with support from the UK government’s Department for International Trade’s Global Entrepreneur Programme (GEP) will see the corporate partnering with schools and museums, each in Thailand and the UK, to boost the training experience. With the COVID-19 pandemic, students and other people are usually not capable of go to museums, and Holo-SDK is the tool to permit people to access 3D content at home with minimal costs, reconnecting history and learning with much more people than ever before.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Perception is a UK-based deep tech company that makes a speciality of Desktop Augmented Reality (Desktop AR). The company develops a Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers to make computer applications using this technology. With its partnership with schools and museums, Perception goals to construct future technological entrepreneurs and professionals, and make technology accessible by putting the tools required for creating Desktop AR applications into the hands of developers. As Dr. Sirisilp Kongsilp, Founder and CEO of Perception, said, "Desktop AR is the technology of the long run, all future computer applications can be holographic!"
