Patchogue-Medford Library’s Award-Winning Augmented Reality Marketing Campaign
Patchogue-Medford Library in New York is making waves in the library world with their innovative use of augmented reality (AR) technology to engage the community and boost library usage.
Two years ago, the library transformed their front window into an AR aquarium, allowing patrons to color fish and add them to the display. This creative idea not only caught the attention of passersby on Main Street but also significantly increased engagement with the library.
At the recent LibLearnX conference in Baltimore, staff members shared their success story at a session titled “Learn Interactive Marketing with Augmented Reality.” The team, including Community Engagement Librarian Emily Spizzirri, Head of Community Engagement Michele Cayea, and Head of Promotions and Development Laura Accardi, explained how they implemented the award-winning marketing campaign.
Accardi, who had been experimenting with AR technology since 2018, found a way to bring the aquarium display to life using projectors and holographic film on the library’s windows. The result was a visually stunning and interactive experience that drew in more visitors and increased summer reading program registrations by 30% in 2022.
The library’s use of AR didn’t stop with the aquarium display. They continue to incorporate the technology into their outreach efforts, creating seasonal and event-specific projections that captivate the community. From displaying the names of graduating classes to hosting virtual fireworks shows, Patchogue-Medford Library has shown that the possibilities with AR are truly endless.
With their innovative approach to engaging the community and promoting literacy, Patchogue-Medford Library is setting a new standard for libraries everywhere. Their success serves as a testament to the power of technology in enhancing the library experience and attracting new users.
