Distance Technologies Unveils Glass-Free AR Prototype for Automotive Industry
Distance Technologies, a new player in the AR/VR market, has recently introduced a groundbreaking technology that they are calling “glass-free AR.” The innovative prototype, developed by CEO Urho Konttori and his team, utilizes hologram-like visuals projected onto a piece of glass installed at an angle.
What sets this technology apart is that it eliminates the need for traditional AR head mounted displays, mobile devices, or tablets. Konttori, who is well-known in the AR/VR community for his work with Varjo, a company specializing in AR/VR headsets for enterprise use, is now targeting the automotive industry with Distance Technologies’s product.
The system, which incorporates Intel RealSense for eye-tracking and Ultraleap from Leap Motion for hand-tracking, is designed to be easily integrated into cars with minimal modifications. Konttori envisions the technology being used by luxury car makers initially, with potential applications in CAD visualization and digital twin design concepts in the future.
While the technology is still in the early stages of development, Konttori is confident in its potential for both enterprise and consumer markets. As the system is refined to work in outdoor environments and with varying light conditions, it could revolutionize the way we interact with digital data in vehicles.
