Tech Company Launches Augmented-Reality Scavenger Hunt App for Eclipse Weekend
Looking for a fun and interactive way to enjoy the upcoming eclipse weekend? A tech company has developed an app that allows you to participate in a community-wide scavenger hunt using augmented reality technology. The 2024 “Roclipse Total Totality Scavenger Hunt” is currently underway in Rochester.
To join the hunt, all you need to do is download the MetaROC app on your cell phone. Once you have the app, you can visit various real-life landmarks across the city to collect digital objects, badges, and coins. These virtual items can be exchanged for real-life freebies and discounts at participating locations.
There are badges hidden in areas around RMSC, the Little Theater, Seneca Park Zoo, RIT, University of Rochester, the Strong Museum, and many other locations in Rochester. If you manage to collect all the badges, you could win a prize of $500. Even if you only collect a few badges, there may still be freebies waiting for you.
The app was developed by a Rochester-based augmented reality technology company called ReplayAR. CEO Brandon Martin shared that the goal of the app is to provide both residents and visitors with an immersive experience of Rochester’s history and attractions.
The MetaROC app is free to download and use during the eclipse weekend. Depending on the success of the scavenger hunt, ReplayAR may consider expanding the format to other cities across the country during major events.
