Google and Singapore Tourism Board partner to bring location-based AR experiences to Google Maps

Exciting news for tech-savvy travelers and Singapore enthusiasts! Google and the Singapore Tourism Board have joined forces to bring location-based augmented reality (AR) experiences to Google Maps, making Singapore one of the first cities in the world to offer this innovative feature.

The collaboration stems from the success of Merli’s Immersive Adventure, an AR tour launched earlier this year through the Visit Singapore Travel Guide app. Now, these immersive experiences will be integrated directly into the Google Maps mobile app, eliminating the need for a separate application.

With over a dozen local tourism stakeholders on board, including popular attractions like Orchard Road and Gardens by the Bay, visitors will soon be able to explore Singapore’s rich culture and heritage through AR technology. From watching a dragon dance in Chinatown to sampling local dishes at Maxwell Food Centre, the possibilities are endless.

Even those planning their trips from afar can get a taste of Singapore through Street View on Google Maps, which will feature AR content for remote exploration. And for those on the ground, the Lens feature in Google Maps will overlay AR content onto their physical surroundings, providing a unique and interactive way to experience the city.

With plans to expand the number of AR experiences beyond 25, the Singapore Tourism Board aims to establish Singapore as the world’s first “AR City” in Google Maps. The full experience is set to launch later this summer, so stay tuned for an immersive journey through the streets of Singapore like never before!
