India’s First Kinematic Bilateral Total Knee Replacement Surgery with Augmented Reality Transforms Patient’s Life
India’s First Kinematic Bilateral Total Knee Replacement Surgery Assisted by Augmented Reality Transforms 70-Year-Old Patient’s Life
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a 70-year-old patient recently underwent a transformative Total Knee Replacement (TKR) procedure, marking India’s first-ever Kinematic Bilateral Total Knee Replacement surgery assisted by Augmented Reality (AR).
Chronic knee pain had plagued the patient’s life for five years, severely limiting mobility and causing considerable discomfort. Traditional treatments offered little relief, and the severity of knee deformity presented challenges for conventional surgical approaches.
However, Dr. Anchit Uppal, Senior Consultant & Head of Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement at Sarvodaya Hospital, led the TKR procedure, using augmented reality (AR) technology to navigate the complexities of the patient’s condition. AR provided real-time visual guidance, allowing precise surgical planning and execution.
“Augmented Reality is a technique in which we would have a visual image of what we’re doing through pixee glasses. I can accurately decide and navigate the cuts at whatever level, the amount of bone that has to be dissected with the exact numbers of 0.5 or 1 degree in measurement, which with the naked eye or mechanical alignment is sometimes difficult in these complex scenarios,” Dr. Uppal explained.
This advanced approach overcame the limitations of traditional methods, ensuring optimal implant placement and alignment for enhanced functionality and durability. The success of the surgery was evident within hours post-operation, as the patient regained mobility with the assistance of a walker.
Follow-up assessments revealed significant improvements in mobility and overall quality of life, marking a seamless transition back to daily activities. “Augmented Reality enables us to visualize and execute surgical procedures with unprecedented accuracy. This milestone surgery represents a paradigm shift in orthopaedic care,” said Dr. Uppal.
The successful outcome of this innovative surgery highlights the potential of AR technology in revolutionizing orthopaedic procedures and improving patient outcomes. This remarkable achievement paves the way for future advancements in surgical techniques, offering hope to patients suffering from complex orthopaedic conditions.
