Poulson was occupied with the intersection of tech and human engagement. “People can suss out in a short time when something is fake. I believe when this technology is used appropriately it gives brands a possibility to create real two-way communication.” He believed that customers reward brands that spend a little bit more time excited about the experience, and there’s a lot scope that isn’t being explored within the more traditional campaigns.
The Journey to Augmented Reality
Poulson’s leap into experiential got here after he left Dentsu and began a consultancy with a business partner, where they “explored how brands could possibly be placed in public without using a print or digital advert.” His true initiation into augmented reality presented itself in the shape of a client temporary from an internet London art gallery called Brit-art.com. The gallery wanted people to see the featured art but not only in photos on their website.
A Light Bulb Moment
“Back then we developed something for Nokia phones,” said Poulson. “It allowed the person to position the artwork on their wall at home, see if it fit the inside, then click and get it shipped out. The truth is quite a lot of people buy artwork to suit their living spaces not only as an investment.” It was a highly practical exercise, but working on the project was a “light bulb moment” for Poulson and his team as they “saw the potential of the sphere”.
Inde: A Company on the Rise
The consultancy grew into two distinct corporations, AppShaker and Inde. The former delivers custom projects for clients and concentrates on R&D whilst the latter ‘productises’ the fruit of those efforts into ready-to-go tech products that might be purchased and used through licensing. Recently, Inde bought AppShaker, merging the 2 corporations together. The office in London is combined and teams collaborate closely.
Areas of Expertise
Inde covers five major areas of immersive experience and augmented reality (AR): broadcast AR, virtual reality, live avatar, presentation AR and mobile AR. However, the AppShaker side of the business touches on virtually every area of immersive with immediate or future potential including robotics, wearables and computer vision.
Looking to the Future
“There’s not a conversation available in promoting or education straight away about robotics, but in the subsequent two to 3 years there shall be,” said Poulson, whose vision of the longer term signifies that profits are injected back into R&D and the event of proprietary technology. Following work with National Geographic and BBC, Inde’s augmented-reality technology is getting used in world-class museums for interactive education.
