Abbey Elliott to Speak on Purdue Global’s Success with Meta Quest Headsets for Online Learning

Associate nursing dean Abbey Elliott will be sharing Purdue Global’s success with Meta Quest headsets for online learning at Meta’s Educators Community Summit in Menlo Park, California. Purdue Global nursing students are using VR and AI programs compatible with Meta Quest headsets to practice on simulated patients from anywhere in the world.

Elliott, who serves as the immersive learning coordinator for Purdue Global and associate dean of innovation and wellness for the School of Nursing, is excited about the possibilities that VR technology offers for higher education settings. She oversees simulation centers in Iowa and Maine, as well as immersive learning opportunities for the nursing graduate program.

According to Elliott, 92% of Purdue Global’s nursing graduate students using VR reported feeling better prepared for clinical practice. The university is looking to expand VR and extended reality opportunities to students in various programs, including law school, criminal justice, science, and nursing programs.

Meta Quest headsets are currently used in nurse practitioner and associate degree programs at Purdue Global. The VR technology allows students to practice clinical skills at any time of day from anywhere as long as they are connected to Wi-Fi. Faculty members are trained in VR and Meta Quest headsets to assist with tech issues and monitor students’ progress in classes.

The Meta Quest headsets are equipped with AI components to help students learn about working with AI technology. Nurse practitioner students use PCS Spark, while undergraduates use Oxford Medical Simulation, both of which have received positive feedback from nursing leadership and faculty.
