Wunetu Wequai Tarrant, in collaboration with fellow Guild Hall Community Artist-in-Residence Christian Scheider, has been working tirelessly on the First Literature Project for the past two years. The project focuses on the revitalization of the Shinnecock language, a crucial aspect of preserving the cultural heritage of the Shinnecock Nation.

The culmination of their efforts is a groundbreaking virtual reality exhibit that will open at Guild Hall on May 18. This exhibit will provide visitors with a unique and immersive experience, showcasing the beauty and complexity of the Shinnecock language.

Members of Ayim Kutoowonk (She Speaks), a Shinnecock language revitalization collective, including Cholena Boyd-Smith, Kaysha Haile, and Ahanu Valdez, have also contributed to the project. Their dedication and passion for preserving their language and culture are evident in the exhibit.

The virtual reality experience will feature interviews with several members of the Shinnecock Nation, including Christina Tarrant, Becky Genia, and Margo Thunderbird. These interviews offer a personal and intimate look into the importance of language revitalization and the impact it has on the community.

Christian Scheider’s expertise in virtual reality technology has been instrumental in bringing this project to life. His creative vision and technical skills have helped create a truly immersive and engaging experience for visitors.

The First Literature Project is not just a showcase of the Shinnecock language but also a celebration of the resilience and strength of the Shinnecock Nation. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving indigenous languages and cultures in a rapidly changing world.
