Student Builds Virtual Reality Experience for Hospice Patients

Introduction to a Unique Field of Study

At Clemson, a dedication to innovating health care and fostering wellness means greater than just training the subsequent generation of doctors and nurses. For Class of 2025 student Rob Martin, it has meant curating meaningful moments for members of his community. Rob got here to Clemson as a self-proclaimed “band kid,” to pursue an audio technology degree, but his time outdoors on and around campus inspired him to tackle a second major studying parks, recreation and tourism management (PRTM).

Connecting Passions through Education

He’s connected his passion for environmental interpretation and his expertise in audio technology through a research opportunity with Clemson’s Virtual Reality Nature Lab. This mix of technology and nature allowed Rob to explore modern ways to bring people closer to the natural world and to experiences they cherish.

The Tandem VR Project

Rob joined the Tandem VR team, an idea invented by Olivia McAnirlin, Virtual Reality and Nature Lab co-director at Clemson, which helps people hook up with past experiences and complete “bucket lists” with their family members. As a part of this project, local hospice care patients were asked what they’d want the possibility to experience yet another time before they pass. When the overwhelming response from patients was a Clemson football game, a research team of undergraduate and graduate students, practitioners, and school started working.

Developing a Soundscape for a Unique Experience

Rob’s role was developing the soundscape for the VR Clemson football game. “I ended up attending to be on the football field,” he says of the production. “That was an incredible experience.” This project allowed Rob to mix his technical skills along with his love for nature and community engagement, creating a novel and meaningful experience for those involved.

Commitment to Quality and Community

A yr later, with the project nearing completion, the VR team members are dedicated to making sure that what they deliver to patients is the perfect quality production possible. “(This VR Clemson football game) might be certainly one of the last things they get to really experience before their health continues to say no,” Rob says. “So we need to make it good for them.” This commitment to excellence and empathy reflects the values of giving back to the community that Clemson embodies.

Giving Back and Looking Forward

For Rob, attending to work on this project was his way of embodying Clemson’s message of giving back to the community. In his life post-graduation, he intends to proceed giving back. “That’s really the part that matters,” he says, “connecting people back with whatever they enjoy. For me, it’s nature, but for other people, it’s attending to experience a football game yet another time… so it’s really rewarding.” This approach to his education and profession highlights the importance of finding personal achievement through contributing to the well-being of others.

Conclusion

Rob Martin’s story is a testament to the ability of interdisciplinary education and community engagement. By combining audio technology with parks, recreation, and tourism management, he has found a novel path that enables him to attach his passions for environmental interpretation and music. His work with the Tandem VR project demonstrates the potential for technology to reinforce human experience and foster meaningful connections. As Rob looks to the longer term, his commitment to giving back to the community serves as an inspiration to others, showing that private achievement will be deeply intertwined with contributing to the well-being of others.
