Lethbridge College Hosts Virtual Reality Hackathon
Lethbridge College’s Spatial Technologies Applied Research and Training (START) Centre is making waves this weekend as it hosts the first-ever Virtual Reality Hackathon in Alberta. The event, known as Hack and Seek: Alberta XR Career Quest, is also taking place simultaneously at Bow Valley College and the Northern Institute of Technology.
With 75 participants from schools across the province, including 30 at Lethbridge College, the Hackathon is set to be a weekend full of innovation and collaboration. Mike McCready, industry liaison and research advisor in START, explained that teams will work together to create virtual reality applications that address real-world problems, with a focus on health issues such as mental health and rehabilitation.
Prizes are up for grabs, with $3,000 for first place, $1,500 for second place, and $1,000 for third place. Additionally, each venue will select a rising star – an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership, collaboration, and innovation – to receive a VR headset.
Exchange student Eduardo Mezzadri from Brazil expressed his excitement about participating in the event, highlighting the opportunity to connect with students from different backgrounds and work on meaningful projects.
The Virtual Reality Hackathon is not only a chance for participants to showcase their skills and creativity but also a platform for fostering relationships and making a positive impact. Stay tuned for updates on the innovative solutions that emerge from this exciting event.
