Permco Launches Virtual Reality (VR) Training Solution Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
Permco, a manufacturer of high-pressure hydraulic gear, pumps, and motors based in Streetsboro, Ohio, has embraced new technology in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The company’s innovative approach not only revolutionized its internal training efforts but also led to the launch of a new tech start-up focused on virtual reality (VR) solutions.
Facing the need to train employees on the complex assembly process of its hydraulic equipment without face-to-face contact, Permco turned to VR technology. With the help of a tech-savvy employee who developed a proprietary VR application, the company created a virtual training solution that guides new employees through the assembly process using Oculus headsets and haptic gloves for realistic feedback.
The VR training tool has proven to be a game-changer for Permco, allowing employees to virtually assemble pumps hundreds of times, gradually reducing software-guided assistance as they progress. The system not only shortens the learning curve and builds competency but also saves time and labor by eliminating the need for a physical trainer on the assembly floor.
The success of the VR training solution has garnered attention from other companies and educational institutions, prompting Permco to patent and market the software as a stand-alone product through its Virtual Training Company subsidiary. The company has also partnered with organizations outside the manufacturing industry, such as medical professional training specialist MedCognition, to demonstrate the tool’s potential in emergency response and mine safety education.
Looking ahead, Permco plans to further enhance and expand its VR training tool while exploring other technology solutions to improve its business operations. With a dedicated team focused on developing new solutions, the company is poised to continue driving innovation and delivering cutting-edge technology to its customers.
