Meta Quest 3S Review: Is it Worth Upgrading from the Quest 2?

Meta Quest 3S Review: A Closer Look at the Latest VR Headset

As a tech writer, I recently had the opportunity to test out the highly anticipated Meta Quest 3S VR headset for our in-depth review. Having previously used the Oculus Quest 2, I was eager to see how the Meta Quest 3S stacked up in terms of visuals and overall performance.

The Meta Quest 3S boasts the same chipset and RAM as its predecessor, the Meta Quest 3, allowing it to play all the same VR games and apps. However, one noticeable downgrade is its displays. Instead of the crisp 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye dual-display setup of the Quest 3, the Quest 3S features the Quest 2’s 1832 x 1920 per eye single display setup.

Additionally, the Meta Quest 3S utilizes the Quest 2’s fresnel lens system, which can cause blurriness at the fringes of the field of view compared to the pancake lenses used in the Quest 3.

The Quest 3 is worth upgrading to

Having used the Oculus Quest 2 extensively in the past, I was initially satisfied with its visuals despite some criticisms of resolution and screen door effect. However, after experiencing the superior visuals of the Meta Quest 3, I now understand the previous criticisms of the Quest 2.

While the Meta Quest 3S offers a solid VR experience at a lower price point, those who prioritize top-quality visuals may prefer the Meta Quest 3. The Meta Quest 3S is a great option for newcomers to VR who may not notice its deficiencies as much.

For VR enthusiasts who want the best visual experience and plan to use their headset frequently, the Meta Quest 3 is the recommended choice. If you can still find the 128GB Meta Quest 3 model, it may be worth grabbing before it sells out and you’re left with the pricier 512GB model.

Overall, the Meta Quest 3S is a solid VR headset with a lower price point, but for those who prioritize visuals and performance, the Meta Quest 3 may be the better option.
